Chester County Opens Composting Site Accepting Food Waste

On September 14 Arborganic Acres, Chester County Commissioners and other partners celebrated the grand opening of the first and only compost site in Chester County permitted to receive food waste residuals from an outside source.
Arborganic Acres, located in North Coventry Township, is the recipient of a Department of Environmental Protection permit to add food waste to the yard waste it collects from municipal curbside leaf collection and other landscaping projects. The compost site will also provide a convenient location for North Coventry Township residents to drop off yard waste for processing.
ING, winner of the 2009 Chester County Green Business Award, is participating in the pilot program by collecting and transporting food waste from its West Whiteland office cafeteria to Arborganic Acres. ING hopes to save money on waste disposal costs and advance its environmental efforts.
There is huge potential for Chester County grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, colleges and universities and other large facilities that produce large amounts of food waste to save money on waste disposal and be environmentally responsible at the same time.
It is hoped that other compost sites will copy Arborganics Acres model and apply for a food waste composting General Permit. Generators will save on disposal costs and composters will produce marketable high-quality compost.
