Environmental Heritage- DCNR At 15: Using Webcams To Capture Fall Foliage
Looking to take advantage of a new-fangled technology, DCNR offered a few of its State Parks to the Department of Community and Economic Development for the first-ever fall foliage webcams to bring the beauty of Pennsylvania’s autumnal colors into homes all over the world. Like this year, a drought had stricken the state throughout the summer, affecting the timing—though not by much—of the peak of the fall folliage.
In subsequent years, the webcams continued to provide web visitors of a taste of the outdoors. But as the “webcam” fad tended to fade, DCED ultimately phased out the live shots and provided some photo galleries—and the two agencies have concentrated on giving some rather “old-fashioned” weekly reports on the splendor of Pennsylvania’s fall show.
