PECO Customers Save $68 Million In Energy Costs With Smart Energy Ideas

Since its launch in October 2009, PECO customers have saved more than $68 million dollars with PECO Smart Ideas, the company’s suite of energy efficiency programs.
            In just about one year customers are estimated to have reduced their energy use by one percent, or 419 gigawatt hours. This energy savings has the same environmental impact as not driving about 457 million miles or planting nearly 440,000 trees.
            “We are thrilled that customers are taking advantage of PECO Smart Ideas, and that the programs are providing the cost saving help they seek,” said Romulo L. Diaz, Jr., vice president of Governmental and External Affairs. “We know our customers depend on us to help them find ways to manage their energy costs, and we spent a lot of time making sure the programs we offered would really help our customers.”
            PECO Smart Ideas offers many programs to help residential, business, government, non-profit and institutional customers save energy and money. So far about 78,000 customers have participated in PECO Smart Ideas, completing an estimated 3.8 million energy saving actions resulting in more than $8 million in rebates. Specifically customers have:
-- Purchased more than 3.9 million PECO Smart Lighting discounted CFL bulbs;
-- Completed nearly 14,000 free energy saving PECO Smart Home e-Audits;
-- Recycled more than 11,000 refrigerators/freezers/AC window units with PECO Smart Appliance Recycling; and
-- Applied for more than 82,000 PECO Smart Home Rebates and nearly 220 PECO Smart equipment Incentives for businesses.
            The programs are part of the company’s support of Pennsylvania’s energy efficiency and demand response targets under Act 129. Act 129 requires all state electric utilities to develop programs to help customers reduce energy use by 1 percent by May 31, 2011 and 3 percent by May 31, 2013. Utilities also must reduce energy demand during the 100 highest demand hours of the year by 4.5 percent by May 31, 2013.
