Weis Markets, PA Recycling Markets Center Form Sustainability Partnership

Sunbury-based Weis Markets this week announced it is partnering with the PA Recycling Markets Center as a Center of Excellence Business Partner to develop new markets for the recyclable materials generated by its 164 stores, distribution center and manufacturing facilities.
Weis Markets is the first food retailer to partner with RMC.
The RMC Center of Excellence Program is a network of sustainable-minded businesses, recycled materials processors, and end-users of recycled materials.  It helps Pennsylvania companies develop new markets for their recycled materials.  Business participants not only gain insights of the recycled materials industry but are also advertised and connected to other potential customers and professions that influence the use of recycled materials.
“Becoming an RMC Center of Excellence Partner was a logical next step for us.  As a company that has been committed to recycling for nearly three decades, we have been successful in finding markets for the recyclable plastic and cardboard waste we generate,” said Kevin Small, Weis Markets’ Vice-President, Construction and Development.  “But as we continue to grow our company and expand our sustainability program, finding new markets for our recyclable waste will be increasingly important.  Ultimately, we want our program to benefit the environment while having a positive impact on our bottom line.”
In 2009 Weis Markets recycled 45.8 million pounds of cardboard and 1.6 million pounds of plastic bags.  Earlier this year, it began a new recycling program for its waxed cardboard boxes and partnered with Envirolog to compress this waste into environmentally friendly fireplace logs, which are currently sold in Weis Markets stores.
