The Chesapeake Bay Foundation this week issued its 2010 Annual Report outlining the wins and challenges related to cleaning up the Bay.

A surge in the blue crab population to improved water clarity and expanding underwater grass beds were promising signs of an a healthier Bay.
With federal stimulus funding provided through the PA Infrastructure Investment Authority, CBF worked to construct improvements on 44 farms across Pennsylvania to keep 1,544,390 pounds of nitrogen, 481,674 pounds of phosphorus, and 1,674 tons of sediment out of streams that flow into Chesapeake Bay tributaries every year.
The projects also created 175 full-time-equivalent, private-sector jobs that lasted a year building manure storage sheds, waste transfer systems, pipelines, fences, and other projects to protect water quality.  Three permanent, full-time jobs running generators that convert manure to energy were also created.
For the past year, CBF has pushed hard for passage of the Chesapeake Clean Water Act, legislation that would provide new federal resources for the Bay clean-up effort.
With lots of help the bill moved from introduction to unanimous, bipartisan Senate Committee passage in just eight months. This month the bill was incorporated into a package of land and water bills for Congressional consideration. Unfortunately, earlier this week, the legislation failed to move forward due to a shortage of but a few necessary votes.
