Penn State Ag & Environment Center Sets AG 101 Courses For Conservation Professionals

The Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center has scheduled a series of Agriculture 101 webinars and field training designed to improve understanding of Pennsylvania’s diverse farm systems, operations, management, economics, animal and plant species, threats, and other issues relevant to whole farm systems.
The training will be held from January 20 to July 29 in a series of 12 sessions.
AG 101 is designed for conservation practitioners—including professionals from Natural Resource Conservation Services, county conservation districts, Cooperative Extension, state agencies, private consultants, non-governmental organizations, and others who are delivering conservation technical assistance on NRCS’s behalf.
The training will improve the professional’s understanding of the farm system in order and will increase their effectiveness in working closely with producers to implement conservation measures.
The course will:
-- Increase conservation professionals’ technical and cultural understanding of Pennsylvania’s basic types of farm operations, the common plants and animals grown on them, the management approaches and technologies utilized, and the essential farm-based vernacular.
-- Provide participants with an understanding of the multiple farm-scale considerations that the producer balances and the intricate linkages between production, management, social- and natural resource decisions.
-- Improve and increase conservation practitioners’ effectiveness in the identification and communication of natural resource problems and opportunities to facilitate collaborative development of appropriate conservation solutions between the course participants, their conservation partners, and the producer/customer.
While there are no prerequisites, prospective participants should note that to be eligible to attend the farm and field portion of the training, webinar attendance leading up to the farm and field event is required.
To participate in the webinar sessions, a “Friends of Penn State” account (user ID and password) is needed.
This training is particularly well suited for conservation professionals with limited agricultural backgrounds or minimal experience with Pennsylvania agriculture especially if they do not have formal or informal agricultural training or backgrounds.
