Photo

A seismograph at the Middletown office of DCNR's Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey registered the earthquake that hit Japan on Friday.

According to Helen Delano, Senior Geologist with the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey, the 8.9 magnitude earthquake was the largest one she has monitored.  See the seismograph reading on the Geologic Survey Facebook page.
The biggest earthquake ever to hit the Commonwealth was a 1998 5.2 tremor which was centered in the Pymatuning area in the Lake Erie region.
