Philadelphia Airport Partners With Adopt-A-Watt To Promote Clean Energy

As part of its efforts to further its Green initiatives, Philadelphia International Airport has reached an agreement with Adopt-A-Watt, Inc., which promotes the funding of clean energy, alternative fuel and energy efficient programs through community sponsorship recognition.
Modeled after the Adopt-A-Highway Program, Adopt-A-Watt provides Sponsor-able Photo-Voltaic Displays, which are energy-efficient solar electric system arrays that are mounted and attached to standard electrical service panels and include an acknowledgement sign bearing the name of a sponsor.
"Adopt-A-Watt is an innovative concept that helps us achieve our Green initiatives and provides an opportunity for community participation in that effort," said Airport CEO Mark Gale. "We are committed to the City's goal of making Philadelphia the 'Greenest City in America' and are open to creative endeavors that will assist us in reaching that milestone."
The Airport has identified more than 50 SPVD sites along the Departures and Arrivals Roadways, the Airport circulation road, and the Economy Parking Lot.
According to Adopt-A-Watt, the SPVDs "sun-generated electricity is used to reduce the need for grid-supplied electricity and has the environmental impact of planting (50) trees. SPVDs…produce clean electricity, new revenue, increase solar awareness and offer community recognition for protecting the environment."
The revenues generated from the SPVDs will cover installation costs and be utilized to fund other projects at the Airport.
Since PECO's electricity rate caps expired January 1, the Airport has been working with an energy advisor to procure electrical service at an economically feasible cost. The partnership with Adopt-A-Watt complements the Airport’s efforts in achieving energy conservation in an economical fashion.
