Brownfields assessment grant funding from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 enabled the Lancaster County Planning Commission to turn a contaminated, dilapidated park in the City of Lancaster into a refurbished and modern community resource.

The Roberto Clemente Park in Lancaster features a new walking path and a state-of-the art baseball diamond for use by youth leagues and the general public - a fitting tribute to Clemente, a Pittsburgh Pirate, the first Latino admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and a humanitarian who died while directing an earthquake relief mission to Nicaragua in 1972.

A sign at the park acknowledges EPA and other organizations for their assistance. A ribbon-cutting is planned for May, 2005 featuring several well-known professional baseball players and members of the Clemente family from Puerto Rico.
