The Historical and Museum Commission this week announced the placement of 27 new blue and gold historical markers. Three of those markers commemorate people or places in Pennsylvania’s environmental history—

Chatham College – One of the first liberal arts colleges for women, founded in 1869. Alma Mater of environmentalist Rachel Carson. (Allegheny County)

Wildwood Park – Part of the “City Beautiful” movement, the park provided flood control and recreation. (Dauphin County)

George Herman Wirt – The state’s first professional forester, he was the director of the State Forestry Academy and Chief Forest Fire Warden. (Franklin County)
