Fish & Boat Commission Host Family Fishing Program At Point State Park July 15

Looking for a fun, inexpensive, and rewarding way to spend time with your family? Want to know what kinds of fish are swimming the Three Rivers these days?  Discover just how exciting fishing can be, how well the fish are biting, and how much fishing quality of the Three Rivers has improved in downtown Pittsburgh.
For your enjoyment and education, the Fish and Boat Commission will be offering a free Family Fishing Program and demonstration of fish survey methods and fisheries management strategies at Point State Park on July 15.
For the free Family Fishing Program scheduled from 1 - 6 p.m., you and your family will discover what it takes to be a “SMART” angler and learn basic fishing skills like knot tying, casting, baiting the hook, and taking a fish off the hook.  After practicing these skills, you will have the opportunity to fish – no fishing license required.  The PFBC will provide equipment and the bait.
The “catch?”  Adults must bring a child and children must bring an adult. You will be learning and fishing together.
For the free fish survey demonstration scheduled from 6 - 7 p.m., PFBC biologists will show the public the variety of fish species that now inhabit the Three Rivers. They will also demonstrate the different survey techniques used on large rivers, including hoop netting and boat electro-fishing. They will present fisheries management strategies for the popular sport species of the Three Rivers, including bass, walleye, sauger and catfish.
The event will provide a golden opportunity to learn about the different types and sizes of fish that can be found in the Three Rivers.  This event will be of interest to anglers and non-anglers alike. Youngsters will be provided a front row view.
Point State Park is located at the confluence of the Three Rivers at 101 Commonwealth Place in downtown Pittsburgh, Allegheny County.  For a park map, directions, parking information, and additional information, please contact Point State Park at 412-565-2850.
