PECO Customers Save $131 Million In Energy Costs With Smart Ideas
|
Since its launch in October 2009, PECO customers have saved more than $131 million dollars in energy costs by taking advantage of PECO Smart Ideas, the company’s highly successful suite of energy efficiency and demand response programs.
This is in addition to more than $40 million dollars also received by customers in PECO rebates and financial incentives for their energy saving actions. This energy savings has the same environmental impact as removing more than 81,000 cars from roadways or planting more than 937,269 trees.
Overall more than 227,000 customers have participated in PECO Smart Ideas energy efficiency and demand response programs. Specifically customers have:
-- Purchased more than 6.8 million PECO Smart Lighting discounted CFL bulbs;
-- Recycled more than 23,244 energy guzzling refrigerators/freezers/AC window units with PECO Smart Appliance Recycling; and
-- Completed more than 26,000 free energy saving PECO Smart Home e-Audits.
“PECO Smart Ideas continues to be an important tool to help our customers save energy and money, and we are thrilled so many customers have participated in the programs and found them helpful,” said Romulo L. Diaz, Jr., vice president of Governmental and External Affairs. “And, we’ll continue to work hard to provide cost effective programs to help our customers achieve the next level of energy efficiency and savings.”
PECO Smart Ideas support Pennsylvania’s Act 129, requiring state electric utilities to develop programs to help customers reduce energy use by 1 percent by May 31, 2011 and 3 percent by May 31, 2013.
As part of Act 129 utilities also must reduce energy demand during the 100 highest demand hours of the year by 4.5 percent by May 31, 2013. In less than two years PECO customers are estimated to have reduced their energy use by 895,122 megawatt hours (MWh) – well exceeding the May 2011 energy reduction goal of 393,850 MWh and already fulfilling 76 percent of the May 2013 energy reduction goal of 1.18 million MWh.
PECO’s progress in fulfilling Act 129 goals was provided to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) on July 15 as part of the Company’s Energy Efficiency & Conservation Preliminary Annual Report. The company also has requested PUC approval on program changes to ensure the continued success of the programs and continue to help customers save energy and money. Following PUC review, proposed program changes are estimated to begin in October 2011.
