Wildlands Conservancy Hosts Tours Of Trout Creek Project, Education Wildlife Center

The Wildlands Conservancy will host three upcoming important events: a tour of the Trout Creek Stream Restoration Project on August 16, a dedication for the Education Wildlife Center at the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary on August 18 and a Guided Hike and Presentation on Blue Mountain starting at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center on August 30.
            Trout Creek Tour
The Trout Creek Project tour on August 16 will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 at Trout Creek Park in Emmaus. This large-scale ecological restoration project on the nearly 1.5 miles of the Creek suffers from the non-point source pollution and habitat degradation typical of a neglected urban stream, and as a result is include on the Department of Environmental Protection’s list of impaired waters. The presentation, including an easy 1-mile walk, will highlight the environmental issues facing the Creek and the current stream restoration project.
Wildlands plans to remove man-made structures to return the stream channel and floodplain to its natural state, replace the expansive invasive plant communities with native ones, and install habitat structures to encourage the return of wildlife.
            Education Center Dedication
The Education Wildlife Center dedication at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary will be held August 18 from 3:00 to 4:00 also in Emmaus.  The new Education Wildlife Center – home to our education animals – at our ribbon-cutting ceremony! Young children (and those young at heart!) are invited to participate in a variety of fun-filled activities focusing on the protection of our natural resources.
The Wildlife Education Center helps Wildlands Conservancy staff naturalists and volunteers have easy access to care, feed, and prepare our animals for their educational presentations all around the Lehigh Valley.
            Blue Mountain Hike
The Lehigh Gap Nature Center will host a Guided Hike and Presentation on Blue Mountain August 30 from 10 to noon in Slatington.  The tour will cover the latest piece of property saved by Wildlands Conservancy. Connected to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center, Appalachian Trail, and State Game Lands 217, these 172 acres will protect plant and animal habitat and provide a place for you to connect with nature.
Join Wildlands Conservancy for an educational presentation followed by a 3-mile walk to tour the property. Please wear appropriate shoes. Nature walk is on steep, at some times rocky, terrain.
To RSVP to one or more of the programs, contact Stephanie Bortz by sending email to: sbortz@wildlandspa.org or call 610-965-4397, ext. 112
