Friends Of Wissahickon Sponsors Series Of Special Events In October, November

The Friends of the Wissachickon in Montgomery County are sponsoring several special events during October and November.

            October 18
Encounters With Remarkable Trees presented by Ned Barnard will take place on October 18, at 6:30 p.m. Ned Barnard, author of New York City Trees, will recall a few of his favorite urban and suburban trees with a PowerPoint presentation.
He has recently co-produced a map of Central Park showing the exact locations of nearly 20,000 trees and is presently co-authoring a guide to Philadelphia trees. In his presentation Ned will concentrate on particularly old, large, rare, or beautiful specimen trees and encourage members of the audience to name their favorite trees in and around Philadelphia.
            October 21
Every year, hundreds of children gleefully strut around the Andorra Tree House as goblins, super heroes, and princesses at the Friends of the Wissahickon’s annual Whispers Along the Wissahickon.
This year, children (and adults!) should have their costumes ready for  October 21. Whispers will be held one again at the Andorra Tree House or Wissahickon Environmental Center, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, at 300 Northwestern Avenue from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
Whispers Along the Wissahickon is the popular autumn celebration hosted by the Friends of the Wissahickon. The event has become a fall tradition for many in Philadelphia and offers a variety of family activities: hay rides, face painting, magic, live music, a large bonfire, and more. A casual dinner, beer, wine, and other beverages will be served.
This year, the Friends of the Wissahickon invite everyone to join them in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Wissahickon Environmental Center, fondly known as the Andorra Tree House.
“The Tree House has been the location of Whispers for the past six years,” says FOW Executive Director Maura McCarthy, “and the environmental educators who work there have always been generous with their time and support for this and other FOW events.”
Whispers Along the Wissahickon will be sponsored by NBC Universal and Prudential Fox and Roach—Chestnut Hill Office, with additional support from FOW Business Members Valley Green Bank, VIST Insurance, Best Nest, and The Valley Green Inn, and In-Kind Support from Brewers Outlet.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Friends of the Wissahickon, a non-profit organization founded in 1924 and dedicated to preserving the Wissahickon Valley. FOW works in partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation to restore historical structures throughout the park, eliminate invasive plant species, monitor watershed management issues, and restore trails throughout the park system with its Sustainable Trails Initiative.
Tickets for Whispers Along the Wissahickon are $30 for adults, $15 for children, and $85 for a family of four. Price includes food, beverages, beer, and wine. This is a rain or shine event that has sold out for the past four years, so buy your tickets while they are still available.
To purchase tickets, call 215-247-0417 or visit the Friends of the Wissahicken online.
