Met-Ed, Penelec Encourage Customers To Shop For Electricity Suppliers

Metropolitan Edison Company and Pennsylvania Electric, both FirstEnergy Corp. electric utility operating companies, are currently mailing more than one million letters to their residential and small commercial customers encouraging them to shop for their electric generation supplier.
The letters contain information to help educate consumers about how they can shop for the best prices on electric generation.
"Even though our electric default supply procurements have resulted in competitive prices,  we encourage our customers to visit the www.papowerswitch.com website to compare prices for electric supply," said Douglas Elliott, president of FirstEnergy's Pennsylvania Operations.  "Competition is taking hold in Pennsylvania as evidenced by the number of suppliers now serving customers in the service territories of both Met-Ed and Penelec.  And, competition ultimately can lead to better prices for consumers."
Currently 10 electric generation suppliers serve the Met-Ed territory and eight offer electricity in the Penelec territory.  While the amount of electricity a customer uses ultimately determines their monthly bill, saving on generation can help customers reduce their overall monthly bill.
In addition, many suppliers offer fixed prices for fixed-length terms.  The price to compare, or PTC, for Met-Ed and Penelec customers changes four times per year – March, June, September, and December.  The quarterly price changes are intended to minimize large price swings in the electric generation market.
Customers with additional questions are encouraged to visit www.papowerswitch.com or contact the Public Utility Commission at 1-800-684-6560.
