Western PA Conservancy Gardens Receive Greening Awards

Fourteen Western Pennsylvania Conservancy gardens and green spaces received 2011 Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Community Greening Awards at a November 19 ceremony at WPC’s Pittsburgh office.
“We were so delighted to host the Community Greening Awards again this year to give public recognition for all the tremendous work and inspiring volunteer spirit that makes these gardens and greening sites possible,” said Judy Wagner, senior director of WPC’s Community Gardens and Greenspace program. “This was a chance to offer applause and thanks to the people whose energy and commitment make their communities and our region not only more beautiful, but also healthier and more sustainable.”
PHS honored 60 gardens and green spaces statewide, 35 of which are in Western Pennsylvania. The Community Greening Award, a collaboration of PHS and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recognizes individuals, garden clubs, civic associations, businesses and community groups that have created and maintained public green spaces that enhance their communities. Municipalities that have led tree-planting initiatives, combated storm water runoff or pursued other ecological projects also participate in the program.
Judges evaluated the sites in July and August based on plant variety, design, use of space and horticultural practices.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, a statewide nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, motivates and inspires people to improve the quality of life and build healthier communities through horticulture.
The WPC gardens and green spaces recognized were:
-- Main Street and Halyday Run Road community flower garden in Oil City, Venango County;
-- Mansfield Avenue and Campbells Run Road community flower garden in Carnegie, Allegheny County;
-- North Linden Avenue and Thomas Boulevard community flower garden in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh Allderdice High School rain garden and outdoor classroom in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh Greenfield Elementary School grounds outdoor classroom in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh Linden Elementary School grounds sensory garden in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh Pioneer Special Education Center, a school courtyard sitting area in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh Schiller Middle School butterfly garden in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh Stevens Elementary School grounds garden in Pittsburgh;
-- Pittsburgh West Liberty Elementary School grounds garden in Pittsburgh;
-- Route 50 and Hope Hollow Road community flower garden in Scott Township, Allegheny County;
-- Route 8 and Route 422 community flower garden in Butler County;
-- Route 910 and Saxonburg Boulevard community flower garden in Indiana Township, Allegheny County; and
-- Wabash Street and Neptune Street community flower garden in Pittsburgh.
