Holiday Recycling Drop-Off Diverts Over 15 Tons Of Material In Bedford County

The Intermunicipal Relations Committee and Concord Plastics of PA, in cooperation with the Logan Valley Mall, collected more than 15 tons of holiday packaging at their drop-off event the week after Christmas.
Area residents were invited to bring wrapping paper, all types of bags and boxes, plastic bags and film, foam packing material and peanuts.  Over 2,000 area residents responded to that invitation with some people coming from as far away as Bedford and Loretto.
When asked about the drop-off, Dave Rhoa, IRC 2011 Board Member and Logan Township Supervisor said, “The community had an overwhelming positive response and many folks thanked us for providing this service.  The staff and organizers worked hard to make this event a success.  I hope that the event not only continues, but grows in its success and number of participants!”
Over fifteen tons of material will be processed locally and then sold as recycled feed stocks to manufacturers.   About a quarter of the material collected consisted of a variety of rigid plastics and film, but cardboard, gift boxes and wrap were the top materials recycled at the event.
Various forms of expanded polystyrene, a material more commonly known by the trademark name Styrofoam, were also dropped off in large volumes, but did not contribute significantly to the total weight.  Organizers were excited to be able to divert this difficult to recycle material from the landfill.
“We had a fantastic turnout.  Never in our wildest dreams would we have thought this year would have been such a huge success.  Thanks to everyone who participated and worked so hard to make the event a success,” John Frederick, IRC Executive Director.
Residents are reminded that the county sponsors recycling drop-offs throughout the county, providing residents with the opportunity to recycle many of these materials year round.  Materials can also be recycled at the two transfer stations.
