Sewickley Creek Watershed Association Holds Annual Fundraiser Banquet

Sewickley Creek Watershed Association was very pleased to have R. John Dawes, Executive Director of The Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds, as guest speaker at their annual fundraiser this year.
With his topic, “Citizen Action Making a Difference,” Mr. Dawes explained how citizen groups can successfully partner with individuals, organizations, foundations, and government agencies to correct environmental damages within their communities. The Foundation provides seed money to allow local groups to access state and federal funding, the majority of which has been for abandoned mine reclamation. Their efforts have resulted in over $118 million worth of remediation projects in Pennsylvania.
Board President, Dr. Ellen Uschak, provided a brief “Who We Are and What We Do” presentation about how the organization was founded in 1991 and the types of projects and services they’re involved in. Included was an update on their Lowber abandoned mine remediation facility in Westmoreland County which received the 2008 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
The Association is partnering with Yough High School to build and install an education kiosk and interpretive trail signs at the facility. The trail construction and planting of 200 trees and shrubs will be the focus of this year’s Earth Day project.
The Association presented “Certificates of Appreciation” to: The Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds; Susan Huba, Executive Director for Loyalhanna Watershed Association; Westmoreland Conservation District; Westmoreland Cleanways; Thomas W. Keller, Executive Director for Sewickley Creek; and, David Jacob Gress, an Eagle Scout candidate who completed his project at the Association’s Lowber remediation facility.
The Association expresses its sincere appreciation to all who attended and supported their 2012 fundraiser banquet. Over 110 guests registered for the event.

The event was held on March 17 at Giannilli’s II Restaurant in Greensburg.
