DEP To Hold Energy Conservation Building Code Workshop In Allegheny County

The Department of Environmental Protection invites residential code enforcement officials, builders, contractors and designers to a May 10 workshop in Coraopolis, Allegheny County, on the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code.
The workshop will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn’s Pittsburgh Airport location at 8256 University Blvd., Coraopolis. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as part of the $40 registration fee.
The IECC is updated every three years by the International Code Council. In Pennsylvania, it is considered part of the Uniform Construction Code, according to Act 49.
This workshop will focus on best-management practices in sustainable residential building. Participants will also learn about sizing of residential HVAC units according to the Manual J methodology, a protocol used to determine how much heating and cooling a home requires.
Attendees will receive six UCC continuing education hours for completing the training. Mike Turns, associate director of the Pennsylvania Housing Research Center, will be the instructor.
Funding for the workshop is provided by the state through a U.S. Department of Energy State Energy Program grant.
