Paddle Without Pollution Plans Special Cleanup On Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers
|
Paddle Without Pollution, a nonprofit watershed stewardship and education organization, is organizing its second cleanup up of Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers on June 9.
Like last September’s event on National Public Lands Day, kayakers and canoeists will launch from three points, one each on the Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela Rivers, and paddle toward Point State Park, picking up trash as they go.
After the cleanup, volunteers will enjoy food and entertainment at Point State Park. Paddlers at last year’s event collected seventy-three large bags of garbage and numerous larger items. Click Here to view a video of the event.
“Our goal this year is to have 100 canoes and kayaks on the three rivers on June 9th,” said David Rohm, Executive Director of Operations for PWP. “We accomplished so much last year with three dozen volunteers, we’re excited to see what we can do with three times that many. One hundred paddlers all demonstrating that they care about our waterways is a show of force that will hopefully remind people how important our rivers, lakes, and streams are.”
In addition to a full schedule of local watershed stewardship events this year, PWP is expanding operations to include helping other nonprofit groups clean up the devastation on the Susquehanna River caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
Other initiatives include addressing non-point source pollution, establishing water trails, developing paddling education programs for disadvantaged young people, and coordinating coastal cleanups.
