DCNR, Partners Sponsor Statewide Tree Inventory Workshops In August

A registration deadline is approaching for a series of workshops—addressing street tree inventories and the latest computer tools available to effectively compile them—that are planned in the eastern and western sections of the state.

Attendees must register by August 10 for the sessions—the first planned in the Allentown area August 16-17; the second, in the Pittsburgh area August 20-21. Topics will include the basics of completing a street tree inventory; an overview of i-Tree Tools available; and use of the i-Tree Streets program.  Attendance at either or both days is permitted and limited.

Workshop organizers maintain inventories of street and park trees are crucial for management, public relations, and reducing community liability. A tree inventory is an important part of developing a sustainable tree program, and provides information for the planning, design, planting, maintenance, and removal of community trees.

This workshop is designed to introduce participants to i-Tree Tools, a state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite that pro-vides urban forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools. Participants will receive hands-on training using data collectors, computers and i-Tree software. Details can found here.

Attendance is suggested for municipal foresters, shade tree commissions, planners, and other representatives from communities of all sizes; forestry agencies; commercial arborists; environmental consultants; and non-profit tree advocates.

This workshop is intended for Pennsylvania communities. Out-of-state applicants will be accepted if space permits after August 10.

Workshop sponsors include Pennsylvania Community Forests; DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry; Penn State Extension; Penn State Extension; Pennsylvania State University, Department of Ecosystem Science and Management; and the USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Area, State & Private Forestry.
