Attorney General-Elect Kane Promises To Use Laws To Protect Natural Resources

Kathleen Kane, a former assistant district attorney for Lackawanna County, was elected Attorney General Tuesday promising to use the state's environmental laws to protect citizens and natural resources. Kane said,"Pennsylvania needs an Attorney General who will take these threats seriously and make vigorous use of our laws to protect our citizens and natural resources." From her campaign website, she outlined this position on prosecuting environmental violators-- “Comprehensive oversight in the Marcellus Shale is critical for the future of Pennsylvania. Protecting landowners who enter lease agreements, the public from potential release of harmful chemicals into the waterways or air, and the preservation of our natural resources are an absolute priority. “Kathleen also recognizes the potential economic gain for Pennsylvania on the development of a clean energy source. Kathleen’s focus is on allowing this development through encouraging responsible policy and accountability. Kathleen believes in an active Attorney General’s office that will investigate violators to prevent harm, not just prosecute. “Under Pennsylvania law, the Office of the Attorney General does not have original jurisdiction over most environmental crimes, but rather can investigate and prosecute based solely upon referral from district attorney’s offices and the Department of Environmental Protection. “Kathleen’s approach will be to facilitate constructive cooperation between energy developers, local prosecutors, private citizens and the office of Attorney General.” For more information, visit the Kane for Attorney General website.
