Jim Kane Talks to an Interested Visitor

The Pennsylvania Resources Council is not the only group in Pennsylvania that will sorely miss Jim Kane, who passed away on June 19, 2005. Kind words flooded in to the organization from fellow conservationists throughout the Commonwealth with such thoughts as:

“I have always enjoyed speaking with him and listening to him speak so passionately about the work of PRC. His love of his work was always so evident.”

Many Pennsylvanians only met Jim by phone, as the person who orchestrated the statewide Litterbug Hotline for many years. Even through the telephone lines, his dedication to the environment was evident.

He could never fathom how people could be careless with the gifts of healthy water, air and soil. He was a vehement opponent of roadside litter and could often be found at the side of PRC’s mascot, the notorious Litterbug.

If ever there was a messenger for the right way to behave toward the environment, Jim Kane was it!

Jim worked with PRC for seven years, having joined the organization first as a volunteer. His contributions included managing litter contracts and programs, developing the litter hot line and clearinghouse, running the statewide Lens on Litter contest, and coordinating community events, volunteer services and maintenance projects at PRC’s eastern office in Ridley Creek State Park.

In 2003, he served as PRC’s interim Regional Director. Prior to joining the PRC staff, he was a Program Manager with Boeing Corporation’s helicopter division and served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A tireless work ethic prompted Jim to continue helping PRC with dogged persistence right through to the last week before his death. We will all miss Jim Kane, described by various friends, coworkers and acquaintances as “a great man – kind, sincere and dedicated.”
