Explore The Wissahickon With FOW Trail Ambassador Scott Quitel March 2

Friends of the Wissahickon Trail Ambassador Scott Quitel is leading a free hike in Wissahickon Valley Park on March 2 from 9 a.m. to noon in Montgomery County. Park near and meet at the trailhead near the intersection of Park Line Drive and Hortter Street.

During this 5.5 mile hike, Quitel will point out early signs of the park “waking up” for spring as hikers roam up and down both sides of the Wissahickon Gorge, traversing sections of the Park’s three main hiking trails. Along the way he will discuss geology while passing amazing ancient rock formations.

The group will also take in such sights as the undersides of the historic Walnut Lane Bridge, a bullfrog pond, Cresheim Creek, Devil’s Pool, the Fingerspan Bridge, an old springhouse, and a cave. The hike will be topped off with a commanding view from atop Mom Rinker’s Rock, alongside the Toleration Statue, with evergreen mountain laurel, and towering, formidable chestnut oaks.

This hike may cover rocky, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Please wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Long pants are recommended for protection against occasional poison ivy and possible ticks. Bring water and a snack if desired. Children over age seven are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain. For more information, contact squitel@comcast.net.

Registration is not required, but is recommended so that you can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.

To register, contact FOW Outreach Manager Sarah Marley at marley@fow.org or 215-247-0417 ext. 109. For information on cancellations and changes, visit the FOW website.
