Get Outdoors PA Highlights Summer Recreation Programs in State Parks, Forests

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources this week encouraged Pennsylvanians to experience their state parks and forests through "Get Outdoors PA"-outdoor recreation programs being offered throughout the commonwealth this summer.

DCNR is launching this year's Get Outdoors PA at the start of July, which is Recreation and Parks Month in Pennsylvania as proclaimed by Gov. Rendell.

"The concept behind our Get Outdoors PA program is to help people rediscover their state parks and forests," said DCNR Secretary Michael DiBerardinis. "The expansion of recreation programming is just one way DCNR is hoping to connect more citizens with the outdoors. This program takes visitation to the next level, by encouraging people to discover new outdoor activities and learn new skills on the public lands, all while having a great time."

A variety of programs are offered on camping, kayaking, canoeing, fly-fishing, mountain biking and other topics expose visitors to techniques by knowledgeable trip leaders. Organized hikes and nature treks combine discovery of the natural world with invigorating exercise. Outdoor courses in Leave No Trace*, wilderness survival and geocaching combine fun with learning.

Most recreation programs are free, but some come with a small fee to cover program costs. While most programs are for beginners, some are tailored for advanced learning experiences.
