Scranton Times: 161 Water Supplies Damaged By Drilling
|
The Scranton Times reported last Sunday oil and gas development has damaged or disrupted water supplies either temporarily or permanently for at least 161 homes, farms, churches and businesses between 2008-2012, according to records obtained by the paper through a Right-To-Know Act request to the Department of Environmental Protection. 17 percent of the investigations were serious enough to warranted replacement of water supplies either temporarily or permanently. The vast majority of water supply complaints investigated by DEP, according to the report, are unfounded, lacking enough evidence to tie them definitively to drilling or caused by a different source than oil and gas exploration, like legacy pollution, natural conditions or mining.
