Allegheny CleanWays/Partners Host 3 Pittsburgh River Cleanup Events

In celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week, the Tireless Project will be hosting three special cleanup events on each of Pittsburgh’s three rivers.

Each will highlight one of the region’s river towns and will conclude with dinner (appetizers and soft drinks on us!) at a local restaurant followed by a chance for an evening fishing trip.

The first event, held on June 1, will celebrate the Ohio River and the Ohio River town of Neville Island. Volunteers will meet at 3:00 p.m. at Paradise Island (bowling alley and restaurant) at the northern end of Neville Island where they’ll board our pontoon boat, the Rachel Carson for a cleanup of the back channel.

After the cleanup, volunteers will gather back at Paradise Island for dinner, drinks and conversation along the riverfront.  Anyone interested in doing a little fishing after dinner can re-board the Rachel Carson for a twilight fishing trip.

The second event, held from 5:30-8:30 on June 4, will be celebrate the Monongahela River, Pennsylvania’s River of the Year, and the riverfront town of Homestead.

After a cleanup of the Mon Riverfront, volunteers will meet for Pierogi Night at Blue Dust in Homestead (601 Amity Street) for pierogis, drinks, and conversation. Fishing will be available after dinner for anyone who is interested.

The last event will be held on June 7 at 5:30. It will take place along the Allegheny River near Sharpsburg.  After a cleanup of the Allegheny Riverfront, volunteers will gather at Silky's Crows Nest, and then take a twilight fishing trip to the point to enjoy the “Riverlights at the Point” celebration.

For each of the cleanups, canoes will be available for those who prefer to paddle and all necessary equipment, supplies and training will be provided.  Volunteers are also welcome to bring their own boats, if they prefer.

Registration is required and volunteers under age 18, must have a signed parental consent form to participate.

For ten years, The Tireless Project, a collaborative program of Allegheny CleanWays, Friends of the Riverfront, Artful Trash Management/RiverCubes.net, REI, Three Rivers Rowing Association, and Venture Outdoors, has been providing riverfront cleanup opportunities that help volunteers build deeper connections to the waterways of Allegheny County.
