June 4 Public Meeting On Carpenter Technology Proposed Coil Cleaning Line Change

The Department of Environmental Protection will participate in a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, to discuss Carpenter Technology Corporation’s plan to replace a steel coil cleaning line at its plant in Reading, Berks County.

The meeting will be held at Steeler’s Fellowship Club, 101 Bern St., Reading, and is being hosted by Carpenter Technology.

Carpenter is seeking authorization from DEP to install and operate new equipment, and has applied for an air quality plan approval to allow the replacement of its steel coil cleaning line, and the installation of new emissions units and control systems.

The proposed work is within an environmental justice area (EJA), where the population is comprised of 20 percent low income and/or 30 percent minority residents. DEP encourages early outreach in environmental justice areas to provide the community with an opportunity to learn about the project, the application review process and whom to contact for more information.

Company representatives from Carpenter will present their proposal to the community at the meeting.

Representatives from DEP’s air quality program will also attend the meeting to answer questions about the application review process and listen to public comment on the company’s application. An interpreter will be on hand to assist Spanish-speaking community members.

The application for the project may be viewed, by appointment, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DEP’s Reading District Office at 1005 Crossroads Boulevard in Reading. Call 610-916-0110 to schedule a time for review.

The application is also available for review from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DEP’s Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, by calling 717-705-4700 for an appointment.

For more information about the proposed project, call Tom Hanlon at 717-705-4702.
