Planting American Chestnut Trees On Mine Lands Workshop September 7

The Schuylkill County Conservancy and its partners will host a workshop on September 7 on planting American Chestnut trees on mine lands at the Tremont Borough Community Center, 139 Clay St., Tremont starting at 8:00 a.m.

At this workshop you will be familiarized with the efforts of the American Chestnut Foundation to restore the American Chestnut back into our Eastern

woodlands. The benefits that this species provides our environment, wildlife and society will be discussed. You will meet researchers and project partners who have made contributions in restoring this tree to our landscape.

The workshop includes a tour of a recently-planted American Chestnut plantation where you will see first-hand how these trees are being used to reclaim mining sites that will greatly help control flooding in nearby communities.

The primary presenter for the workshop will be Sara Fitzsimmons, American Chestnut Foundation, North Central Coordinator and Research Technician at Penn State University.

There will be a fee of $5 for attending the workshop, which includes bus transportation and morning refreshments.
