Volunteers Needed For Stream Buffer Tree Plantings In Dauphin, Lancaster Counties
|
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation-PA is organizing two stream buffer tree planting events on September 21 in Middletown, Dauphin County and on September 28 in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County. Dauphin County The September 21 event along Swatara Creek will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is being held in partnership with Londonderry Township and Penn State Extension's Greening the Lower Susquehanna initiative. After the 2011 floods, Londonderry Township purchased several properties along the Swatara Creek through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. These properties frequently flooded in the past and make poor locations for houses and other buildings. In an effort to restore these properties to their natural wooded state, we will help the Township create a riparian buffer that will improve the water quality of the Swatara Creek and help prevent flooding in the future. Lancaster County The September 28 event along Mill Creek is in partnership with the Lancaster County Conservation District and East Lampeter Township, where volunteers will plant a large forested buffer (1,100 trees) in this suburban park, just off Route 30. The riparian buffer, made up of native tree and shrub species, will protect Mill Creek from polluted runoff, provide habitat for wildlife, and improve water quality in the creek.
