Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Announces 2013 Tire War Champion

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Thursday congratulated their local affiliates of Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful, Keep Juniata County Beautiful, PA CleanWays of Mifflin County, and Keep Perry County Beautiful on a successful eighth annual Tire War, a friendly competition to compete for the most tires collected at their perspective special collections.

This year’s winner was Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful with 2105 tires. The coveted ‘Gold Rim’ award will reside with the affiliate until next year’s competition.

Keep Perry County Beautiful came in second place with 1,037 tires, PA CleanWays of Mifflin County collected 681 tires, and Keep Juniata County Beautiful earned the ‘Flat Tire’ award with 563 tires collected.

The collections, sponsored in part by the Department of Environmental Protection’s HHW/Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Program, have gathered and recycled 20,796 tires from local County residents since 2006.

“These collections provide a convenient, low cost alternative to the community. The tires that are collected at these events won’t end up over the hill where they would be difficult and costly to remove,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep Pennsylvania beautiful.  “I really commend our affiliates for providing this service and for generating excitement and camaraderie within our network.”
