The Chestnut Ridge Chapter of Trout Unlimited was given approval by the Department of Environmental Protection to restore a four-mile stretch of Morgan Run in Dunbar Township, Fayette County that is badly degraded by acid mine discharges. This project is one of those rare cases where remediation of AMD discharges from an abandoned mine site will result in the restoration of the entire stream. A total of six discharges will be treated by a combination of several different types of passive treatment technology, resulting in restoration of four miles of Morgan Run back to its designated use as a High Quality stream. Successful completion of the project will substantially increase the local fish and macro-invertebrate populations, and allow the local community to once again use the stream for recreation purposes. The project is being completed under the Environmental Good Samaritan provisions of the Environmental Stewardship Act that created the original Growing Greener Program in 1999. The program encourages landowners and others to reclaim abandoned mineral extraction lands and abate water pollution caused by abandoned mines, and oil and gas wells. The act protects landowners, groups and individuals who volunteer to do such projects from civil and environmental liability. For more information visit the Good Samaritan webpage. |
