The Pennsylvania Environmental Council, a leading statewide environmental organization, has named Janet Sweeney to the position of vice president.

Ms. Sweeney has been the director of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s northeast office in Luzerne since 2005, where she has directed operations and activities related to the organization’s conservation and environmental programs in 16 counties throughout that part of the state.

In addition to her duties managing PEC’s northeast office and its various programs, Ms. Sweeney will also assume management responsibility for POWR, the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers. POWR is a nonprofit organization affiliated with PEC to protect Pennsylvania’s watersheds.

“Janet Sweeney is an important voice on our management team,” said PEC president Paul King.  “She’s also proven herself to be an effective advocate for environmental stewardship and conservation in northeastern Pennsylvania.   We’re confident that she’ll be a tremendous asset to PEC’s mission as we pursue the environmental challenges and opportunities in that part of the Commonwealth.”

Prior to joining PEC, Ms. Sweeney was a planning consultant in northeastern Pennsylvania.  She was also vice president of community and government services for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance.  Her background also includes positions in transportation and community planning in both the private and nonprofit sectors.

She holds her bachelor of arts from the State University of New York at Geneseo and a master of science in planning and regional development from the University of Arizona.

Ms. Sweeney is a member of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Advisory Council for Conservation and Natural Resources, the Countryside Conservancy Advisory Board, the Pennsylvania Planning Association and the American Planning Association.

An avid outdoor recreation enthusiast, Ms. Sweeney resides with her family in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania.
