The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will join its federal partners in co-hosting the White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation on August 29-31 in St. Louis, Missouri. Featured at the Conference will be the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Philadelphia Green Program. The Conference is a public-private forum to exchange information about successful partnerships in cooperative conservation and only the second environmental conference ever sponsored by a President. The conservation effort builds on a history begun in 1908 when President Theodore Roosevelt held the first conservation conference to formulate a national policy based on the efficient use of resources. Seeking better and broader conservation in the 21st Century, President Bush signed the Executive Order Facilitation of Cooperative Conservation a year ago. This order directs the federal agencies that oversee environmental and natural resource policies and programs to promote cooperative conservation in full partnership with states, local governments, tribes, and individuals. During the conference, EPA will highlight the agency's efforts to cooperate on all levels of government and with non-governmental organizations.
