CBF Supports Proposed EPA/Corps Rule Protecting Wetlands, Headwater Streams

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Vice President Kim Coble issued this statement Monday following the release of a proposed new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency/Army Corps of Engineers rule designed to protect isolated wetlands and headwater streams. The rule clarifies which water bodies are entitled to federal protection under the Clean Water Act.

“The Chesapeake Bay Foundation welcomes the proposed new rule, which we expect to play an important role in protecting local waterways. The health of seasonal and rain-dependent streams and wetlands near streams and rivers is crucial to the health of downstream waterways. This protection will help implement the region’s Clean Water Blueprint.

“The 371-page rule also calls for evaluating waters with more uncertain connections to local waterways on a case by case basis. CBF will be looking closely at those details to ensure that they offer sufficient protections as well.”
