Creatures Of The Garden Program At Governor’s Residence Aug. 10

The Governor’s Residence gardens in Harrisburg will be open to the public for the “Creatures of the Garden” open house on August 10, as part of the free, “Second Sunday” events scheduled throughout the summer.

The family-friendly event will showcase creatures of all shapes and sizes that inhabit gardens in Pennsylvania. Visitors will have an opportunity to observe live animal demonstrations, hear educational presentations and participate in hands-on activities.

“Due to the popularity of ‘Creatures of the Garden’ last year, the Governor and I decided to offer this exciting program to the public again this summer,” First Lady Susan Corbett said. “Visitors will learn about nature, while getting an up-close and personal look at the animals that live in backyards across Pennsylvania.”

Numerous organizations will be on hand to share information and offer demonstrations, including: the Backyard Beekeepers Association; Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art; Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Dauphin County; Game Commission; and ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park.

Jack Hubley, host of “A Wild Moment,” will offer an educational program titled “Critters Beyond Your Back Door” at 2 p.m. It will feature mammals, birds of prey and snakes that are native to Central Pennsylvania.

Each second Sunday through September, visitors are invited to explore the Governor’s Residence gardens from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Events take place rain or shine.
