In an effort to highlight the untapped potential of solar energy in western Pennsylvania, the Solar Unified Network of Western PA, the Borough of Millvale and dozens of solar companies and supporting organizations are co-sponsoring the second Allegheny SolarFest on June 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millvale’s Riverfront Park. This year, SolarFest will feature solar demonstrations, functional solar art, live music, kids’ activities, food trucks and a microbrew beer garden. “Since there was so much interest in last year’s festival that drew more than 800 people from across the region, we were excited to expand this year’s activities,” said Greg Winks, treasurer of Solar Unified Network of Western Pennsylvania and festival lead organizer. “Solar energy works very well in western Pennsylvania, which receives much more sun than Germany – the leading solar nation. With the dramatic drop in the cost of solar energy over the past few years, this technology is now within reach of almost anyone who can afford their electric bill.” SolarFest will include live music from Ben Shannon, the Maple Tiger String Band and the Beagle Brothers and exhibits from more than 25 vendors touting the benefits of clean, healthy energy, including solar installers, solar owners, and non-profits. Participants will enjoy solar toy car races, an Electric Car show with a Tesla, BMW i3 and Volt cars, interactive kids’ activities, Venture Outdoor climbing wall, face painting, human-powered water cannons, the Breathe Mobile, Pittsburgh food trucks, as well as a local microbrews by Grist House Brewing of Millvale. “Millvale Borough is once again happy to co-sponsor the SolarFest, especially since we have expanded our use of solar energy at our library and other buildings in the borough since last year.” said Brian Wolovich, Millvale Borough Councilman and Millvale Community Library President. “Millvale is proud to showcase our commitment to transitioning an older riverfront community to one that embraces sustainable practices that enhance the quality of life in our community for our residents and businesses.” For more information, visit the Allegheny SolarFest website or Facebook page.
