Aug. 20 Hearing On Permit Changes To Yukon Landfill, Westmoreland County

Department of Environmental Protection will host a public hearing August 20 on a proposal from MAX Environmental Technologies  for a permit modification allowing the company to increase the elevation by approximately 40 feet, of a portion of the Yukon facility.

The increase would allow for an increase in the amount of solid waste that could be placed in that portion of the facility.

The hearing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the South Huntington Township Volunteer Fire Department (Huntington Place) 90 Supervisor Drive, West Newton, PA 15089.

By raising the final height of waste at the facility, capacity would be increased by approximately 640,000 cubic yards and would increase the site life by about 4 years.

The facility is a 159 –acre permitted residual and hazardous waste management facility in Yukon, Westmoreland County.  Active operations at this site include hazardous waste treatment, waste storage, and on-site waste disposal.

During the first hour, Both DEP and the company will make brief presentations followed by an question and answer session.  Members of the public will also have a chance to present testimony on the permit modification request.

Those wishing to provide formal comments must register with Community Relations Coordinator John Poister either by email to: jpoister@pa.gov or by calling 412-442-4203 before 3:00 p.m. on the day of the hearing.  There will also be an opportunity to register on-site before the hearing begins.

Those unable to attend the hearing may submit written comments to the Department of Environmental protection, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.  The public comment period closes on September 21, 2015.
