DEP Expects To Meet September 2016 Deadline For EPA Clean Power Climate Plan

Wednesday, DEP Secretary John Quigley said he expects the agency to submit its version of a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet EPA’s Clean Power Climate Plan requirements on time in September 2016 without asking for an extension.

Quigley also said Pennsylvania would not join other states in their legal challenge to eliminate the Clean Power Plan requirement or accept a default plan written by EPA for state’s not developing their own plan.

Quigley emphasized DEP’s approach is a “blank page.”  “Right now, we’re open to everything, attached to nothing,” Quigley explained.

Quigley’s comments were made during a webinar Wednesday designed to kick off a series of 14 listening sessions around the state to hear from the public and interested groups on what Pennsylvania’s version of the Clean Power Plan should include.  The sessions begin September 15 in Harrisburg.

As a starting point, DEP is asking for comments on a list of 21 issues to be considered in the Plan.

In addition to the listening sessions, DEP will accept comments on Pennsylvania’s compliance with EPA’s Clean Power Plan through November 12, 2015.

Comment submissions can be made through DEP’s eComment system or emailed to: ecomment@pa.gov or mailed to 400 Market Street P.O. Box 2063 Harrisburg, PA 17105.

For questions concerning the comment period and listening sessions, contact the DEP Policy Office at 717-783-8727.
