Sept. 23 Meeting On Mine Fire Project In Lackawanna County

The Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public information session regarding the Powderly Creek Northeast Underground Mine Fire Reclamation Project in Carbondale, Lackawanna County.

The session will be held on September 23, at 6 p.m. at the Carbondale City Hall located at 1 North Main Street.

The project, located on approximately 108 acres near the city, is designed to eliminate an abandoned underground mine fire and reclaim approximately 82 acres of nearby abandoned mine lands, including dangerous 130-foot highwalls made of coal refuse and surrounding debris piles.

Work on the project is getting underway, and this meeting will allow for local residents and officials to learn more about the planned work and to ask questions. Earthmovers Unlimited, Inc. of Kylertown, PA has been awarded the contract to complete work at the site at a bid price of $8,947,731.84.

Individuals in need of an accommodation as provided for in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 should contact Colleen Connolly or make accommodations through the Pennsylvania AT&T Relay Service at 800-654-5984 (TDD).
