PA Horticultural Society, Partners Plant Over 1,000 Trees In Southeast
|
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and a wide variety of partners are planting more than 1,000 trees in the Greater Philadelphia region this month. The activities are part of the Plant One Million campaign, the largest multi-state tree-planting effort in the nation. The goal is to restore the tree canopy cover in the Greater Philadelphia region to 30 percent in order to improve the environmental health and beauty of our communities. The PHS Tree Tenders program, which trains volunteers to plant and care for trees, is adding 1,080 trees in 32 Philadelphia neighborhoods and 30 communities in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. Supporting the tree plantings this season was a $10,000 donation from Dreaming Tree Wines. A tree was planted in honor of the donation at the Navy Yard, where the PHS staff distributed trees to the Tree Tender volunteer groups. PHS, the Philadelphia Housing Authority and PowerCorpsPHL are working together to plant a total of 50 trees at the Lucien E. Blackwell Homes and Richard Allen Homes. Alumni of Emory University and residents of the Blackwell and Allen Homes will participate in the plantings at the PHA sites. More than 100 members of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania participated in a tree planting and a PHS Junior Flower Show on November 14, in Valley Forge National Park. The full day of activities included programs hosted by National Park Service Rangers, who helped the girls connect with parks and learn about stewardship of their natural landscapes, historic sites and cultural resources. The day began with the planting of 100 trees and seedlings along a riparian buffer in the park by the Girl Scouts and adult volunteers. The environmental project will be counted toward earning the PHS Patch created for the Girl Scouts. Two parks in Delaware County will receive new trees planted in memory of the parents of Bruce Brown and his family. In Chester Park, in Chester, Pa., 20 bare-root trees will be planted on November 18 in a grove near the barns, and a bench with a memorial plaque will be installed later this month. A dozen trees also will be planted and a memorial bench will be installed in Houston Park in Wallingford, Pa., this month. Residents throughout the region are being asked to add at least one tree to their home landscape, and to “count” their tree on the Plant One Million website to strengthen research and the impact of the tree canopy.
