PA Horticultural Society Tree Tenders To Plant 889 Trees, Other Earth Day Events Set

Volunteers trained by the PA Horticultural Society will plant 889 trees in Philadelphia and surrounding counties as part of Earth Week activities in the region. The plantings will be conducted by 28 Tree Tender groups in Philadelphia and 28 groups in the surrounding counties.

The plantings in the city will include:

-- 18 trees planted by the new APM Tree Tenders in North Philadelphia;

-- 31 trees planted by the new Chestnut Hill Tree Tenders group; and

-- 80 trees planted by UC Green Tree Tenders and the University of Pennsylvania in Mantua and other West Philadelphia neighborhoods.

The plantings in the counties will include:

-- 50 trees in Haverford Township, Delaware County;

-- 30 trees planted in Upper Dublin Township, Montgomery County;

-- 20 trees planted in Abington Township, Montgomery County..

The PHS Tree Tenders will pick up the bare root trees this week at the PHS Warehouse at the Navy Yard, and plant the trees on April 22 to 24. Click Here for a map of the tree planting locations.

These efforts are part of Plant One Million, the campaign to restore the region’s tree canopy. Plant One Million reached the halfway mark last fall, with the planting of the 500,000th tree to commemorate the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia.

The campaign encompasses 13 counties in three states and is led by PHS, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the TreeVitalize Program of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the New Jersey Tree Foundation, and the Delaware Center for Horticulture.
