Penn State Webinar May 19 On Monitoring Seismic Activity In PA
|
Penn State Professor of Geosciences Dr. Andrew Nyblade will hold a webinar May 19 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on “Seismicity in Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State Seismic Network.” The presentation will cover how how the monitoring works, the seismic network, and findings thus far from the research. While DCNR’s Topographic and Geologic Survey and Penn State University have been monitoring seismic activity in Pennsylvania for several years, the possibility of hydraulic fracturing being the cause of earthquakes in other states has grabbed headlines lately. Most scientists have noted fracking does not pose a significant risk in causing seismic activity, but research is ongoing—DEP is partnering with DCNR and Penn State in an effort to maintain a network of seismic stations around the state. The webinar is free but participants must register through Penn State. For more information, visit the webinar webpage or contact Carol Loveland by calling 570-320-4429 or send email to: cal24@psu.edu.
