Chiques Watershed Expo June 22, Farming For Success June 23 In Lancaster County
|
The Chiques Creek Watershed Expo will be held June 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 South Chiques Creek Road, Manheim. The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance sponsors this annual family friendly event on the banks of the creek to teach watershed residents about how to protect and restore the watershed. The event features food and ice cream and live music, and plenty of fun and interesting displays from the watershed alliance and other partners. The Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center will be on hand for the Expo and the next day, June 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for “Farming for Success,” a Penn State Extension field day held at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim. This 120-acre Penn State research farm is in the heart of Lancaster County and the Chiques Creek Watershed, and is host to research and demonstrations on a variety of best management practices to improve water quality, including no-till, cover crops, riparian buffers, rain gardens, and native pollinator plantings. Farming for Success will bring producers together with ag industry representatives to explore innovations in crop production and conservation. The AEC is actively working in the Chiques Creek Watershed to facilitate “Chiques Creek Reenvisioned,” a robust partnership working to restore water quality. Partners include the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, the Department of Environmental Protection, Susquehanna River Basin Commission, Lancaster County Conservation District, Lancaster County Conservancy, Lancaster County Clean Water Consortium, watershed municipalities, LandStudies, Inc., Wild Resources, Inc., Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and many others. Be sure to stop by to meet AEC staff and learn about our work in the Chiques! (Reprinted from the latest Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center quarterly newsletter.
