DEP Awards Contract For $1M+ For Mine Reclamation Project In Washington County

A state grant from the Department of Environmental Protection will aid in the completion of an abandoned mine reclamation project in Westland, according to Sen. Camera Bartolotta (R-Fayette).

The grant, totaling just over $1 million, was awarded to Berner Construction, Inc. in order to remediate the property. The project includes 700,000 cubic yards of grading, 24.4 acres of tree planting preparation, 730 square yards of tied concrete block mat, 60.9 acres of seeding, and 16,500 trees for planting.

“Abandoned mines create a serious hazard to our environment and present a risk to the community,” Sen. Bartolotta said. “It is critical to ensure these dangers are identified and addressed before they pose a greater threat to public health and safety.”

The project is expected to begin on July 30 and should be completed by August 9.
