The PA Resources Council will host a Hard-To-Recycle Collection Event on July 30, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the North Allegheny High School, 10375 Perry Highway in McCandless, Allegheny County.

The event will enable area residents to conveniently dispose of cell/home phones, CFL bulbs, computer towers and peripheral equipment, expanded polystyrene packaging material, microwave ovens and stereo equipment at no cost.

Individuals will pay a fee to drop off televisions, computer monitors, alkaline batteries, CDs/DVDs/floppy discs, fluorescent tubes, small Freon appliances, small kitchen appliances, stereo speakers and tires (with and without rims).

While government regulations prevented PRC from accepting televisions at its first 2016 collection event in April, a recent policy clarification by the Department of Environmental Protection has allowed PRC to resume collecting TVs, although it now must charge a fee to recycle televisions and computer monitors.

PRC’s new fee structure for upcoming hard-to-recycle collection events in 2016: $15 computer monitor; $25 television; and $35 console or projection TV.

“The good news is that residents can once again drop off TVs at PRC collection events; the bad news is that PRC now must charge a fee to cover the cost of recycling televisions and computer monitors,” said PRC Western Regional Director Justin Stockdale.  “We’ve worked with legislators, regulators and recyclers to resolve this issue, and we all understand that this is an interim solution at best.  We’re eager to work with DEP and the Legislature to find a permanent fix that provides free and convenient TV recycling to all Pennsylvanians.”
