Pittsburgh’s Re:NEW Sustainability Festival is a month-long celebration centered on the themes of creative reuse, sustainability and transportation to be held this year from September 9 through October 9.

Once a smoky city of heavy industry where the skies darkened with soot at midday, Pittsburgh has emerged as a reinvented, post-industrial city committed to sustainability, green building, and new urbanism.

The Re:NEW Festival is a collaborative effort of a multi-sector group of civic leaders instrumental in the city’s resurgence: Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Carnegie Museum of Art, Sustainable Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Resources Council, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, VisitPITTSBURGH, and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

Re:NEW will feature conventional and alternative space art exhibits, talks, tours, hands-on workshops, markets of upcycled goods and thought-provoking films and performances.

Over 20 organizations from the arts, environmental, and education sectors are involved in presenting Re:NEW festival programming throughout downtown and to points around the city.

Visual arts are at the heart of the Re:NEW Festival, with the North American premiere of Drap-Art (Barcelona) to take center stage at the PPG Wintergarden. This curated exhibition brings together 50+ accomplished international artists who create provocative art from reused materials.

Five artists and the Drap-Art curator, Tanja Grass, will visit Pittsburgh from Barcelona to open the show.

A juried arts exhibition comprised of 31 artworks from Southwestern Pennsylvania artists juried by Eric Crosby (Carnegie Museum of Art), DS Kinsel (BOOM Concepts) and Kilolo Luckett, independent curator, will be showcased at 623 Smithfield Street.

Art installations, films, performances, and sculpture will be presented throughout the month by approximately 30 additional artists, both from this region and across the country.

The Re:NEW Festival organizers will hold a press briefing on August 9 at the former Office Depot at  623 Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh starting at 10:00 a.m.
