The Delaware Highlands Conservancy and the Downtown Hawley Partnership are hosting a work day to remove mile-a-minute weed that is currently growing in Hawley’s popular Riverside Trail on August 23 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

An invasive and fast-growing plant, known as mile-a-minute weed (Persicaria perfoliata), has been discovered in our region. This annual vine can grow up to six inches a day, quickly smothering other native plants and even ascending into the tree canopy where it becomes very dense.

The plant can be controlled early by hand-pulling.

Landowners throughout the Upper Delaware River region should remain vigilant in identifying and removing mile-a-minute weed on their properties. To identify it, look for a vine with alternate, triangular, light green leaves that are barbed on the underside, with round leaf-like structures surrounding the stem.
