The House Republican Policy Committee held a hearing August 23 to discuss the differences between conventional natural gas wells and unconventional shale gas wells in anticipation of the state’s new forthcoming Chapter 78 regulations.

The hearing also included a discussion on the pipeline construction needed to bring natural gas to power plants in order for the energy generation sector to meet new EPA air quality regulations and the obstacles currently blocking that endeavor.

Testifiers included: Mike Huwar, TransCanada/Columbia Midstream; Michael Knapp, MDS Energy Development, LLC; Tom Defibaugh, Snyder Brothers Inc.; and Paul Bergad, Bergad Specialty Foams & Composites.

Rep. Jeff Pyle (R-Armstrong), an outspoken opponent of the update to DEP’s Chapter 78 drilling regulations, hosted the hearing.

The hearing was held at the Henshaw Farms Banquet Facility, 314 City Road, Freeport, Armstrong County.
