The Brodhead Watershed Association is seeking volunteers to be part of its StreamWatchers Program for the Bushkill Creek Watershed in Monroe County. Training for new StreamWatchers will be held on September 9 at the Middle Smithfield Township Building, 147 Municipal Drive, East Stroudsburg. The program and equipment are provided free of charge through a grant from the William Penn Foundation and support from The Nature Conservancy and BWA. Streamwatch trainer Jackie Speicher will guide participants through Streamwatch protocols, including how to record observational data such as water color, odor, and turbidity; and how to use test kits that sample for pH of the water, nitrate concentrations and orthophosphates. Veteran Streamwatchers will be available to answer questions. Volunteers note any changes in their streams and report "red flags" – major changes in the appearance or the chemical tests performed. These “stream stewards” fulfill an important role in safeguarding the quality of Pocono waters as well as helping the public become more aware of the valuable natural resources we share. For information, visit the Brodhead Watershed Association StreamWatchers webpage or to register, contact Jackie Speicher at 570-236-3008 or send email to: jackie.speicher@brodheadwatershed.org.
